Landsvirkjun celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. We realised early on that extensive knowledge on the impact of our operations on the surrounding environment was essential as environmental aspects have remained a key issue since the establishment of the Company. Requirements pertaining to environmental issues are constantly increasing and Landsvirkjun is committed to being a leader within the field.
Landsvirkjun’s first step toward environmental awareness was the land reclamation project in the Þjórsárdalur Valley alongside the construction of Landsvirkjun’s first power station, the Búrfell Hydropower Station. Numerous environmental projects carried out by the Company in the last fifty years have resulted in the acquirement of extensive knowledge on the natural resource, the ecosystem and the natural environment. Landsvirkjun utilises natural resources to generate energy and our operations have an inevitable impact on the surrounding environment and ecosystem. We should therefore tread cautiously with efficiency, consensus and sustainability as our guiding principles.
Landsvirkjun‘s team of employees has decades of experience in seeking out solutions to minimise the negative impact of our operations and to maximise the positive. The extent of this experience is apparent in assessing a diverse range of power projects. Extensive information is of key importance in ensuring that the design of a power station is environmentally acceptable as well as technically and financially feasible.
Preparation measures for the Þeistareykir Geothermal Power Station began this year in the northeast of Iceland. Landsvirkjun has been involved in the careful and sustainable development of geothermal utilisation in the area for a number of years. Preparation measures at Þeistareykir have focused on environmental issues and ensuring that landscaping and finishing work are carried out alongside construction.
Landsvirkjun plays an important role in promoting sustainable energy. Climate change is threatening the world's ecosystems and it is our responsibility to set an example by further reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sharing our experience and knowledge on utilising renewable energy sources.
Environmental issues are a key factor in all our operations, from the idea stage to the energy generation stage. We build our operations on a solid foundation and are constantly developing our skills in sustainable utilisation in harmony with the environment and society.
